How many Earths could fit inside the Sun?
You’ve learned that the Sun is about 109 times as large as Earth in diameter. But this does not mean that only 109 Earths could fit inside the Sun. You probably know that the volume of a cube is its side length to the third power. For example, if cube is 10 centimeters on a side, its volume is 103 = 1,000 cubic centimeters. In fact, all volumes scale as the third power, or cube, of length. This fact gives us an easy way to figure out about how many Earth’s could fit inside the Sun. Because the Sun’s diameter is 109 times that of Earth, it’s volume is about 1093, or about 1,300,000, times Earth’s volume. In other words, if we could stuff them in without any wasted space, more than 1 million Earths would fit inside the Sun!
