What would it feel like to be inside a cloud?
From the ground, a cloud may look kind of like a big, fluffy pillow, so you might wonder what it would feel like to be inside one. In fact, you probably already know, since you’ve probably been inside a cloud before!
The reason is because you’ve probably been in fog , and fog is simply a cloud that forms close to the ground. In other words, there’s no difference between fog and clouds, other than where they are located. Both fog and clouds consist of tiny droplets of water or tiny crystals of ice. We call this a “cloud” when it is high above us and “fog” when it is close to the ground.
In other words, being in a cloud would feel exactly like being in fog. In most cases, this means you’d barely notice anything, aside from the fog or cloud limiting how far you can see. If the fog or cloud is particularly thick, you might notice a little bit of wetness as the droplets (or ice crystals) touch your skin.
Note that this also explain why airplanes can go right through clouds: For most clouds, the effect is no different from the effect of driving a car through the fog. However, some clouds can represent extreme weather, like a thunderstorm, in which air is rapidly rising or falling and winds are very strong. In this case, the clouds can pose a danger to airplanes, which is why pilots try to avoid flying through storm clouds.
